Get to Know Your Apples!

Last weekend I went apple picking to Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, CT. It was definitely the biggest orchard I’ve ever been to, with dozens of fields just full of apples, and many others for pumpkins, butternut squashes etc. But how does one know what kinds of apples to pick? I found this incredibly useful chart on The Slate, which convinced me to go after Ida Red and Jonagold. I was looking for some Granny Smiths as well but was unable to locate any. Still this pretty much summarizes stuff that everyone who loves apples would like to know πŸ™‚

My favorite part of these orchards was definitely their market – the apple cider donuts were to die for! Two days later, these donuts still tasted as fresh and moist after having been warmed in the oven for 5 minutes. Drooling over these donuts and want to make some for yourself? Their apple pie was underwhelming however, fully convincing me that these should be made fresh at home. Ready for an afternoon full of being covered in and rolling out dough? Try this recipe for apple pie

So what’s your favorite fall dessert? and can I please have its recipe? πŸ™‚
